stay cool

San Franciscans are sadly ill-equipped to handle temparature surges of more than 78 degrees. A late summer heat-wave ultimately leads to a lot of complaining and a convenient excuse to cancel all your plans and lounge in a state of semi-undress while eating ice pops.

On to important matters. I am determined to buy a pair of thigh-high boots for fall, and I've found a couple of promising options on Bebe and Topshop's website. The Topshop boots are available in a 38.5, which is apparently equivalent to a UK 6. I normally wear a US size 8, so these could either be perfect or a bit too big. Does anyone know how they run??

The pair on Bebe's website would be my second choice because they have a higher heel and they're not real leather, but they actually look pretty similar. Everyone, please do your civic duty and vote.

who killed the video star?

Photobucket
Photobucket

I just saw the music video for "We Run This Town" and found myself siezed by a sudden thigh-high-hooker-boot-induced fit of raging jealousy. Rihanna's wardrobe is so ridiculously on-point. And it's not just her. Everyone looks good. Jay-Z is even positively less...camel-like. Which is a triumph in and of itself.

If video killed the radio star, who killed the video star?

Forgive me, I need to take a moment to complain about Project Runway. I watched the first episode on Sunday and was concerned about a number of developments that led me to believe the show has gone waaay low-budget. First, it's on Lifetime, which is weird because I thought Lifetime only showed movies about women being victimized by men/impregnated at 16/kidnapped by a next door neighbor, etc., etc. Secondly, it's in LA, which is a total downgrade from NY (not just on the show but like, in general). As if to drive home the fact that it's gone downhill, the best guest judge they could get was Lindsay Lohan. Very disappointing, though mildly entertaining to watch her vote off the one designer who looked A LOT like Samantha Ronson. Surely I'm not the only one who noticed??

With all that being said, unless they get rid of Tim Gunn (don't even THINK about it) I'll probably watch even if they start using cocker spaniels as models and former cast members of The Real Housewives of New Jersey as designers. My standards are pretty low.

ps
I got these Frye boots at my favorite vintage store for $45. Sometimes it SO pays not to buy something on ebay. I never would have been able to get them for so cheap.

is this real life?

I left the house only once today, and it was on a seriously compromised food run that ended in disaster (i.e. the failure to procure food). Other than that, I was working, hence the fact that the outfit post was taken in the piss-poor light of my living room and not on some fantastically windy hill with a vista of the city in the background.

It has suddenly come to my attention that I don't do anything besides go to work and work from my couch and sleep and once in a blue moon, do something daring like say, visiting a museum or getting my nails painted. Is this life?

Loving every goddamned detail of this Mirco Giovaninni collection. Unfortunately I'm pretty sure the only part of this look I have a chance in hell of recreating is the orchids in the ears. I'll still be dreaming of that one-shouldered ochre blouse though...

God I love sleeves.

Summer Sundays: now 25% less depressing than regular Sundays! Ain't that something...

Bought these ridiculously comfortable Frye heels on double-sale at Bloomingdales. I think I'm a little bit in love. They have cork on the footbed like those somewhat hideous Balenciagas that everyone has been wearing. I will say this though: I get it. Cork is springy and light and seriously comfortable. I'll never admit saying this again, but Birkenstock was on to something. Except for the whole being hideous thing.

It's hard to believe that the Gerber baby pictured above, Isabella, is already almost 6 months old. It seems like just yesterday I was trying to convince Kelli that having a child was the last thing she needed in her life. Remember when I was whining about that? Ha, I've always been a judgmental holier-than-thou bitch. I'm going to hellllll.

Have a super sexy week everybody!

WIN

Photobucket

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner. Congratulations to Maegan from ...love Maegan!! Not only did she send me a bitchin' inspiration site, it happens to be her own Tumblr account where she's compiled the best stuff from all over the web. And I swear, I wasn't in any way swayed by this picture of her French Bulldog LeRoy looking at me with his little bat-face. Not. At. All.

Maegan, I'll let the wonderful people at Chickdowntown know that you are the winner. In the meantime, follow one of these links and pick your poison. My only request is that you show us all your loot when you get it. Actually come to think of it, that's a requirement. Don't disappoint me.

Below, some more personal favorites from Maegan's collection. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend checking it out here. And if you haven't ever been to Maegan's blog, I don't even know you.

LaRok jumper, boots by ? via Gilt Fuse

Imagine my utter delight at accidentally stumbling across the thigh-high hooker boots of my dreams today when I went to check out the Gilt Fuse sale. Unfortunately, they weren't for sale and I have no idea who makes them. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Currently watching Army of Darkness, a movie that I totally should have seen when I was 8. Watching shitty early 90's movies that you didn't experience as a child is always weird.

Contest ends tonight at midnight, so if you haven't yet entered, I suggest you do.

I bought this dress about 10 years ago at what used to be a vintage shop in the French Quarter of New Orleans called Trashy Diva. It's in remarkably robust condition for a garment that witnessed the presidency of Harry S. Truman. It's also homeade, which is quite stunning given the level of detail and all the little tucks and pleats scattered everywhere.

Just a friendly reminder that the contest ends Friday, so if you live in the United States, like free clothing, and have a bitchin' photo inspiration site to share with me, then click here and enter!

Just a few lovely pictures to help cure the Monday night blues.

BTW, I'm loving all the links you guys submitted for the giveaway. So glad I didn't just do something boring like pick names out of a hat. May the best man win (cool stuff from BB Dakota and Love Quotes). And if you haven't entered yet, it's not too late.

weekend

I'm wearing Pollini silk pants, Urban Outfitters t-shirt, vintage necklace, thrifted denim jacket, bracelets from India, H&M shoes (yes, again).

The sis was in town. On Saturday we went to Chinatown to her favorite tea shop, where I was promptly convinced that buying $40 worth of tea was an excellent idea. Apparently now I'm going to live forever and have absolutely no wrinkles until I'm 105.

And today I went to see the lovely and majestic piece of horseflesh you see pictured below. For those of you who don't know, I have a horse. His name is Frankie, he's a 21-year-old Canadian Thoroughbred, and he's the only thing in the whole wide world I care about more than myself, which is refreshing. He's sort of an unrideable cripple at this point, but he sure does make a pretty pasture ornament.

...With a headache. Pissy because my boyfriend decided he was 'done shopping' before I had a chance to fully explore the sale offerings at Zara. After a solid week of not blogging, that's honestly all I've got to report.

Here are some crappy outfit pictures of a not-crappy outfit from Thursday. Can you tell I'm feeling very Joan Holloway?

Make no mistake, my Louboutins are about as tragically uncomfortable as they are beautiful, but they're oh-so-worth it. I've been a little obsessed with keeping the bottoms from getting scuffed, and therefore they haven't gotten as much wear as they rightfully deserve. But all that is going to change because I realize how stupid it is to have spent a month's rent on something that remains in my closet looking amazing when they should be on my feet looking amazing.

Thank you, Rihanna, for reminding me that beautiful things are meant to be worn and not just ogled.

Currently watching the second season of Mad Men and marveling at the sheer size of Christina Hendricks' bust. I believe the word 'stacked' comes to mind. Watching this show always makes me think I should take up smoking again because it looks so goddamn hot, especially with pencil skirts. Unfortunately like so many things, smoking is better in theory than in stinky, cancerous reality. Lame.

Thanks to everyone who has already entered the Chickdowntown contest and giveaway. I figured I needed to benefit in some way from this little arrangement, so I'm forcing you all to cough up your secret photo inspiration sources for a chance to win. See post below for further instructions, but it's not rocket science:

Step 1: comment on this or the post below with your email address

Step 2: Give me the name of your super top-secret online source for photo inspiration

If your suggestion inspires me more than any of the others, you get to choose any item from BB Dakota or any Love Quotes scarf from Chickdowntown's site. Pretty easy, huh? So, do it then!

Outfit post tomorrow, I promise.
