home goods

It's been awhile since I shared pictures of my apartment, so indulge me and pretend you care for a minute. Most everything is thrifted/hand-me-down/swiped from the street (the best place to furniture shop in SF) and everything has just very recently started to come together in a semi cohesive way. I credit this to many late-night rearranging sessions and a healthy willingness to get rid of anything that doesn't fit or is just plain not useful.

My biggest gripe about my apartment is that it has wall-to-wall carpet, and gross wall-to-wall carpet at that. Luckily this flat-woven giant Ikea rug covers up most of the mess in the living room. I just need to find something similar for the dining room now. Someday I'll move, but in the meantime, rent control is a beautiful thing.

looks to rip

One of the best things about being a weirdo internet stalker is all the amazing inspiration I get from other blogs. Believe me folks, if you think you're safe from my prying, prodding eyeballs, you're not. I'm watching you.

Here are 5 outfits that caught my eye recently, from some of my MVP bloggers.

Trini G is always one of my go-to bloggers when I need inspiration for classic looks. Here she is reminding me that a simple cropped black pant with a trench coat is always a win.

Krystal Simpson always rocks the shit outta menswear looks. I'm going to try to pair a mannish blazer and pants with a floaty chiffon top after seeing this look.

My soul sista/partner in snark Duckalicious always comes up with the most interesting pairings. She's a total mixmaster. This outfit makes me want to attempt to mix acid yellow with cobalt blue accents and my most Cleopatra-esque vintage necklace. I even have a turban similar to the one she's wearing here!

The woman who needs no introduction...Karla of Karla's Closet, wearing yet ANOTHER Shareen Vintage find that makes me green with envy. Must bust out vintage ladylike dresses and pair them with cool-girl hipster accessories like the sunglasses she's wearing here and hope equal cuteness will ensue.

Najeema of A Stylized Hysteria is just one of the many girls who I've seen rocking boyfriend jeans lately. But she's one of the only girls who manages to get the accessories just right--with western-style ankle boots and a rad, southwestern style statement necklace.

Thanks girls! Keep it comin'. You may just see me biting your style. Poorly, of course. The copy can never outshine the original.

TopShop Jellies via Knightcat

In the words of me, I would rather strap flaming turds to my feet or wear thigh high boots sewn from the skin of premature dead babies than let these perverted abominations anywhere near me.

That being said, I'm a fickle creature, so give it 3 weeks and a handful of sightings on Kate Bosworth and I'll probably be fully on-board.

eclipse shadows

IMGP4227 IMGP4226 IMGP4230 IMGP4225 wearing H&M dress, BR belt, Zara shoes

I'm ridiculously impressed with the fit of this H&M dress. Sometimes all you need is a little fit + flare action to elevate your mood.

UPDATE: My friend Stacy pointed out that those crescent shaped bright reflections on the side of the house are from the eclipse. I can't believe I didn't realize that. Sometimes I'm dumber than a Kardashian.

bared

wearing vintage skirt, madewell denim shirt, no-name sunglasses, earrings from Morocco, vintage and thrifted jewelry, and Derek Lam shoes

Hangin' on street corners with Kobes the other weekend, enjoying a brief stint of warm weather, which has now of course been replaced with typical "summer" weather in SF--blisteringly cold and windy with thick fog that only dissipates sometime around midday and then comes roaring back in the early evening. Kind of like this

Don't know if you can tell, but I flirted, ever so briefly, with the idea of a crop top and high waisted skirt with this outfit. I think I've decided that one can avoid unpleasant mid-90's references as long as the belly button is covered. What say you?

my mother, the style icon

my mom is on the far right in every picture, except the bottom one of course

Yes, I know these pictures look like they were taken last week with the "Hefe" filter on Instagram, but they were actually all legitimately taken in the 70's. First when my mom was a Kappa at LSU, and later on when she moved to Paris to be an Au Pair for a year. She looks so young (probably about 21-24) but I remember seeing them as a child and thinking she looked like a grownup. It's funny how your perception of your parents changes as you slowly morph into versions of them at different ages. If you compared my college pictures to my mom's, you'd probably be struck by how similar they are--except my outfits were definitely not this cool. Also, I did more drugs.

Anyhoo, the point of this post (besides lamenting the fact that my mom doesn't have that camel peacoat anymore) is that my mom is still beautiful, still has an enviable closet, and still inspires me every day. Basically, she's the best mom ever.

ready to rock

Derek Lam shoes

Sometime between April showers and June Gloom, we get 1-2 weeks of absolutely gorgeous weather that just makes you happy to be alive. Last weekend was one of those weekends. I used it as an excuse to take my new Derek Lam flatforms out for a spin.

nothing but met

Allow me to go all Joan Rivers on you and give you my take on the Met Gala red carpet fashion. No really, please let me do it. I'm dying to share.

Disclaimer: Chloe Sevigny gets an automatic pass from me on all matters that concern fashion. That being said, I honestly do like this mirrored Miu Miu shift dress in an Andy Warhol/Edie Sedgwick let's-get-almost-naked-and-experiment-with-LSD kind of way:

Rihanna in head to toe Crocodile skin--a look that I would HATE on Renee Zellweger or January Jones but that just works on her because she is a saucy little sexpot. Also, because she could claw your eyes out. (Dress by Tom Ford)

Carey Mulligan (aka Michelle Williams v. 2012) in huge ass Prada sequins/fish scales. I like how the spangles light up her left cheek. I'm a whore for sparkly objects though, so it gets a full-on cosign by me.

Solange (the OTHER Knowles) is kind of a fashion darling right now, and I can see why. She's wearing the hell outta this Rachel Roy dress. And hats off to her for going bare-necked. It is so tragically unhip to wear a billion diamonds. Save it for the Oscars.

Don't you DARE say anything bad about Elisabeth Banks' Mary Katrantzou dress. I adore it. The little capelet is like a minaudiere for your shoulders.

Ok, before you go all apeshit proclaiming that SJP should march her dress right back to the set of  Little House on the Prairie, let me just say this one thing--the shoes match the dress. Somehow that makes it ok. I can't explain myself, I'm just going off my gut here. (Valentino Dress)

Karolina Kurkova looks like a gilded alien femme bot (in the best way) and RZ (also wearing her own line) looks positively radiant (read: less creased). She has been fucking with the botox needle hard, and I hate to say it but it looks fantastic.

I kind of feel like Lena Dunham's Wes Gordon dress was the result of a project runway challenge where Heidi gave the designers 1 hour to create a Met Gala look and this designer had a total meltdown when he thought someone stole his thread and ran out of time before he could properly finish the hem. I will say this: it's nice to see her looking so un-Hannah like IRL. Because I'm pretty sure she plays herself on the show, 'Girls.' (BTW: thoughts on Girls? I think it's well written and has charming and funny as well as horribly awkwardly unfunny moments. But I'm giving it a try. And yes, it is so totally whitewashed).

Ok, I know I should give her a pass because she's a model, but I honestly don't appreciate the fact that I can see the fascia that attach Anja Rubic's hip bone to her femur. I also don't appreciate that someone (her makeup artist?) rubbed oil on it before going out so that it looks even more pointy and sad. All I can say is, holy boob tape. (Anthony Vaccarello dress)

And last but not least, Kirsten Dunst's homage to Mrs. Claus. I'm racking my brain trying to figure out if this Rodarte outfit could ever manage to not look Yuletide-y. And I think I've come to the conclusion that no, I will not ever look at it and not get "Santa Baby" spinning around in my head. It is what it is.
So, how about you all? Favorites? Disappointments? Thoughts? Concerns?

i'll have another

It's definitely a dream of mine to attend the Kentucky Derby. As you can see I already have my outfit picked out.
